We all use them when we send text messages; now they have been included in the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). They are the online abbreviations OMG, “oh my God”; LOL, “laughing out loud”; FYI, “for your information; and IMHO, “in my humble opinion”. The OED calls them “initialisms” because they are made up of initials. Young people know and use thousands of these shortcuts on social media sites like Twitter and when sending SMS texts. They are useful when there is a limit on the number of characters used in a message. An OED editor, Graeme Diamond, believes there’s more to initialisms than simply saving space in messages. He thinks young people use them to show irony.
Mr Diamond, who is responsible for allowing new words into the OED, said one of the initialisms, “OMG” was not so new as it was included in a letter written in 1917. New entries in the OED include “ego surfing” – the practice of searching your own name on the Internet, and the “five-second rule,” that "allows for the eating of a delicious morsel that has fallen to the floor, provided that it is retrieved within the specified period of time". Lexicographers also decided that the term “muffin top” deserved an entry. This is defined as "a protuberance of flesh above the waistband of a tight pair of trousers”. It’s also known as “spare tyre” or “love handle”. The dictionary has also included the heart symbol <3 meaning "love".

Lembrem-se que ele se chama Present Perfect por uma razão: tem sempre algo relacionado com o presente de quem fala ou da situação da qual se fala. Comecemos com alguns exemplos:

I have lost my car keys. (Perdi as chaves do meu carro. Não estou com elas agora, portanto não posso entrar no carro.)

Have you done your homework? (Fizeram a tarefa? – Pergunta a professora querendo ver a tarefa feita agora.)

I have broken a glass. (Quebrei um copo. Há cacos de vidro por todos os lugares.)

Why can´t John buy that new car? – He has lost his job. (Por que John não pode comprar aquele carro novo? – Ele perdeu seu emprego. Agora não tem dinheiro para comprar o carro.)

Viram a conexão entre o passado e o presente?

O Present Perfect também é usado com uma série de advérbios:

JUST: indica que a ação acabou de acontecer. He has just finished doing his homework. (Ele acabou de terminar de fazer sua tarefa.)

EVER: alguma vez na vida. Have you ever gone hiking in the mountains? (Você já foi fazer trilha nas montanhas?)

ALREADY: já (nas frases afirmativas). I have already been to China. (Eu já estive na China.)

NEVER: nunca. I have never seen such a beautiful thing. (Nunca vi coisa tão Linda.)

YET: 1. já (quando se espera que a resposta seja afirmativa) – Have you done the dishes yet? (Já lavou a louça? – Era esperado que você a lavasse.) – 2. ainda (em frases negativas) – No, I haven´t done the dishes yet. (Não, não lavei a louça ainda.)

SINCE – desde. I have been a teacher since 1992. (Sou professor desde 1992.)

FOR – há, por, faz. I haven´t seen him for a long time. (Não o vejo há/por/faz muito tempo.)

DICAS:

1. Quando a pergunta contiver WHEN nunca use o Present Perfect, sempre use o Simple Past: When did you start studying English?

2. O Present Perfect também é usado para indicar a quantidade de vezes que a pessoa faz algo. Por exemplo: This is the first time I´ve come here. (É a primeira vez que venho aqui.) – She hasn´t been here lately. (Ela não tem vindo aqui ultimamente.)

Nível 2: Present Continuous (Unit 9)

Observe as seguintes frases:

I am taking the hood off his head (Eu estou tirando o capuz da cabeça dele).
He is wearing a long black overcoat (Ele está usando um sobretudo longo e preto).
We are both running along the tunnel (Nós dois estamos correndo pelo túnel).

Nessas frases, a forma verbal se refere à ação do sujeito no momento em que está sendo praticada. Essa simultaneidade é expressa pelo Present Continuous, que pode ser traduzido literalmente para o português.

Na escrita, normalmente é usado com expressões de tempo, como now (agora), right now (agora, já) e at the moment (neste momento). Na linguagem falada isso não ocorre, pois o diálogo corresponderá à ação desempenhada no momento da fala.

Formas

Você notou que nas estruturas do Present Continuous aparecem sempre dois verbos, o verbo “to be” e um verbo principal. Isso ocorre porque o Present Continuous é um tempo composto: é formado por um verbo auxiliar e um principal. Os tempos simples, como, por exemplo, o Simple Present, são formados somente por um verbo principal. Necessitam de verbos auxiliares apenas para a construção de frases negativas e interrogativas.

Para formar o Present Continuous usamos o verbo to be (am, is, are) e o verbo principal na sua forma – "ing".

Exemplos:

I am walking in a long dark tunnel (Eu estou andando em um longo e escuro túnel).
He is waiting for me. (Ele está esperando por mim).

O verbo to be é o auxiliar, portanto fundamental à construção de frases negativas e interrogativas.

Frases Negativas

Formamos as frases negativas, acrescentando "not" após o verbo to be.

Exemplos: He is not looking at me. (Ele não está olhando para mim).
I am not waiting for the man (Eu não estou esperando pelo homem).

Frases Interrogativas

Formamos as frases interrogativas, colocando o verbo to be antes do sujeito.

Exemplos: Are you having a nightmare? (Você está tendo um pesadelo?)
Where is the man walking? (Onde o homem está andando?)

The Internet in my Life

I had a computer at home, but it was just used as an educational tool for my sister and me. I’m not sure about my very first experience with the Internet. However, I am sure it was at the place where my dad worked. I went with him to his work and while he was doing his tasks, I was surfing the web, checking out sites about computer games, chatting and so on.

I remember when I started to access the internet at home. It was necessary to dial to an internet service provider by telephone line and every time my mother asked to shut down the computer because she needed to call someone. It was amazing to download files, to hear music, to play on-line games with your friends. I played at first the multiplayer game “The Age of Empires”.

Nowadays I’m used to surfing everyday to read e-mails, to chat with my friends, to download some new songs or to search for interesting news, to watch my favorite series, hence, to spend my leisure time. Internet became an essential tool to study harder, to work faster and to communicate more frequently.

It’s also possible to shop online. Actually, it’s very handy to compare prices on online stores before I go shopping. I’ve bought several books around the world just by doing some clicks. At times, it was cheaper to buy an African book than a Brazilian one.

Actually I don’t understand how we could live without the Internet for so long in the past.

Hoje vamos falar sobre a forma be able to, nós usamos can quando queremos descrever uma habilidade no presente, mas no passado ou no futuro devemos usar be able to. Vejam abaixo:

No passado usamos was able to ou were able to:

Ex.: I missed the last bus, but I was able to get a taxi. (Eu perdi o último ônibus, mas consegui pegar um táxi.)

No futuro usamos will be able to:

Ex.: You will be able to speak English fluently. (Você estará falando inglês fluentemente.)

Devemos também usar be able to após verbos ou frases que sejam seguidos pelo infinitivo ou a forma –ing:

Antes de começarmos a estudar a terminação –ing, vamos esclarecer uma coisa. Gerúndio, em português, é a terminação –ando, -endo, -indo, -ondo. Em inglês, a palavra gerund (que é o verbo com a terminação –ing) tem outros usos, além do gerúndo da língua portuguesa.

1) O uso mais conhecido é como parte do tempo verbal Present Continuous (ou Progressive). Tal tempo tem dois usos: indicar uma ação acontecendo no momento e indicar também futuro.

I am reading an article about the –ing ending right now. (presente)
She is leaving tomorrow morning. (futuro)

As formas reading e leaving têm o nome de present participle e não gerund.

Alguns verbos chamados Stative verbs, como know, understand, believe, like, decide, seem, hate, want, entre outros, não têm a forma do Present Continuous então não aceitam –ing, com sentido de ação acontecendo agora ou futura.

2) Chamamos de gerund quando a terminação –ing é usada com um verbo e a função de tal verbo é de substantivo. Dêem uma olhada nas seguintes frases.

New York is fun.
German is difficult.
That is a hamburger.

Quais das palavras acima são substantivos? Fácil, né: New York, German e a hamburger. Dissemos que algo (substantivo) era alguma coisa (adjetivo). Agora, e se quisermos dizer que uma ação é divertida (por exemplo jogar futebol), ou difícil (aprender chinês) ou simplesmente dizer o que é uma ação? Veja as frases sem os substantivos.

__________ is difficult.
That is _______________.

É ai que entram os verbos com a terminação –ing.

Playing soccer is fun. (Jogar futebol é divertido)
Learning Chinese is difficult. (Aprender chinês é difícil.)
That is tap-dancing. (Isso é sapateado.)

Nas frases acima as palavras playing, learning e dancing parecem verbos, mas não são. São substantivos pois respondem a pergunta, “O quê?”. O que é divertido? O que é difícil? O que é isso?

Até mesmo os Stative verbs podem ser transformados em substantivos. Veja alguns exemplos:

Believing in God is important.

Lembrem-se que ele se chama Present Perfect por uma razão: tem sempre algo relacionado com o presente de quem fala ou da situação da qual se fala. Comecemos com alguns exemplos:

I have lost my car keys. (Perdi as chaves do meu carro. Não estou com elas agora, portanto não posso entrar no carro.)

Have you done your homework? (Fizeram a tarefa? – Pergunta a professora querendo ver a tarefa feita agora.)

I have broken a glass. (Quebrei um copo. Há cacos de vidro por todos os lugares.)

Why can´t John buy that new car? – He has lost his job. (Por que John não pode comprar aquele carro novo? – Ele perdeu seu emprego. Agora não tem dinheiro para comprar o carro.)

Viram a conexão entre o passado e o presente?

O Present Perfect também é usado com uma série de advérbios:

JUST: indica que a ação acabou de acontecer. He has just finished doing his homework. (Ele acabou de terminar de fazer sua tarefa.)

EVER: alguma vez na vida. Have you ever gone hiking in the mountains? (Você já foi fazer trilha nas montanhas?)

ALREADY: já (nas frases afirmativas). I have already been to China. (Eu já estive na China.)

NEVER: nunca. I have never seen such a beautiful thing. (Nunca vi coisa tão Linda.)

SINCE – desde. I have been a teacher since 1992. (Sou professor desde 1992.)

FOR – há, por, faz. I haven´t seen him for a long time. (Não o vejo há/por/faz muito tempo.)

DICAS:

1. Quando a pergunta contiver WHEN nunca use o Present Perfect, sempre use o Simple Past: When did you start studying English?
